What is Prayer?
Prayer is the force that shapes the world, "The prayers of God's saints are the capital stock in heaven by which Christ carries on His great work upon the earth" (E.M. Bounds). In God's word he requires that we ask of him in order to take hold of the power of his hand to move the mountains in our life.
I will declare the decree:...Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. (Ps. 2:7-9, emphasis added)
Clearly in this scripture God requires of us to ask of him, and everything else he is going to do for us. God says that his house is going to be a house of prayer (Isaiah 56:7). It is the prayers of his people all around the world that are going to make this happen. For some reason there are many people that beleive in the efficacy of prayer, but few people that pray!
The prayers of holy men appease God's wrath, drive away temptations, resist and overcome the Devil, procure the ministry and service of angels, rescind the decrees of God. Prayer cures sickness and obtains pardon; it arrest the sun in its course and stays the wheels of the chariot of the moon; it rules over all gods and opens and shuts the storehouses of rain; it unlocks the cabinet of the womb and quenches the violence of fire; it stops the mouths of lions and reconciles our suffering and weak faculties with the violence of torment and violence of persecution; it pleases God and supplies all our need (Jeremy, Taylor)
As you can see prayer is the most important tool availabe to christians. It allows us to talk to the God of the universe and pray that his will is done on earth. As friends of God we can ask him to do things for us, and as long as we are praying according to his will it is going to be done.
